Dog rescue in Houston, TX

MISSION STATEMENT

Golden Beginnings Golden Retriever Rescue, Inc., (GBGRR) established in May 1999, is an all volunteer, non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The Rescue relies solely on donations and fund raising activities, with all proceeds going directly to cover all veterinary and general care of Goldens in need.

All founding members live in multi-Golden Retriever households and dearly love the breed. All Rescue members are volunteers who hold many different jobs in “real” life. The volunteers are not “professionals” in animal behavior, training, or health, although the Rescue does have contact with those who are.

GBGRR was formed:

To provide shelter, veterinary care, and comprehensive evaluations for homeless, stray, abandoned, abused, and neglected Golden Retrievers;

To provide a good quality of life for homeless Golden Retrievers of any age;

To provide, through adoption, permanent loving homes for displaced and unwanted Golden Retrievers, whether young or old, sick or healthy;

To seek to reduce the numbers of unwanted, abused and neglected Golden Retrievers through rehabilitation, education, and adoption;

In accepting dogs into the Rescue program, preference is given to those facing euthanasia, to those living in shelters or pounds, and to those in untenable living situations. The Rescue also attempts to accommodate owner turn-ins, to keep those dogs from facing such fates and to allow them to go from one home to another with less disruption.
·
To educate dog owners and the general public about responsible pet ownership, including spaying and neutering, training and humane care of Golden Retrievers and other pets;

To cooperate with state and local authorities in the enforcement of laws related to the welfare of dogs.

To protect the Golden Retriever from careless breeding in order to preserve the excellent qualities of this breed for future generations.

GBGRR will gladly cooperate with other rescue groups in neighboring areas to aid in the placement of Goldens into the appropriate loving family environments they deserve. The Rescue’s coverage area overlaps several areas where Golden Retriever rescue groups are already in existence. The Rescue’s hope is that by providing a large area of coverage, no Golden Retrievers will “fall through the cracks” when several groups are contacted, and no decision can be made as to which rescue group should handle certain rescue situations. One of the Rescue’s main goals is to have enough volunteers and foster homes state wide that all small towns and shelters will have someone to call when a Golden Retriever is in need.

GBGRR is an all-volunteer, non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) organiztaion.

Additional adoption info

GBGRR does not do adoptions to families with children under 5 (five) years of age.

All applicants must be 21 years of age or older to submit an application.

GBGRR will consider out of area/state adoptions, however, adopter must be prepared to assist with planning transportation for the dog, and agree to pay any and all expenses associated with the transportation.

The adoption donation is $250.00.

The adoption donations are used to cover the cost of medical treatments incurred while the dog has been in the possession of GBGRR, prior to adoption. (i.e., examinations, spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm checks and preventative, heartworm treatments, flea preventative, etc.)

There is a 14-day trial period for all adoptions. As with any new pet, there will be a short adjustment period when your new Golden comes into your home. When you commit to an adoption, we expect that you will work with your new Golden and make a sincere effort to tackle any problems that may arise not only during this adjustment period, but also throughout the Golden’s life. GBGRR may be able to offer you some suggestions to help you and your Golden through any adjustments or problems. Occasionally, despite the best efforts of all involved, an adoption does not work out. In this case, the Golden must be returned to GBGRR, as stipulated in the adoption contract. If the dog is returned within 14 days, the adoption donation fee (less the adoption application processing fee and any transportation expense incurred by GBGRR) will be refunded.

GBGRR attempts to place our Goldens in the best possible of home environments. To that end, several interviews (including a telephone interview, review of the adoption application and a home visit to see where the dog will live, play and exercise) will be held between the prospective owners and GBGRR volunteers and/or representatives.

The interviews and application will help the Adoption Coordinator and the foster parents determine which Golden is the most suitable for each applicant.
PLEASE NOTE: A submitted application does not guarantee adoption of a Golden Retriever from GBGRR, nor does the application guarantee that the dog an applicant would LIKE to adopt from GBGRR is the one that is best suited to meet their needs. GBGRR reserves the right to offer the dog that they feel is best suited to match the application.

Adoptive families must agree to: periodic follow-up calls and visits during their first year of ownership, providing medical treatment when necessary, all annual booster vaccinations at the clinic of their choice as recommended by their vet and as required by city/county/state law, providing regular heartworm preventative, and keeping the Golden contained and not allowing the Golden to run loose at any time. GBGRR places Goldens as primarily indoor dogs, and adoptive families should plan for their Golden to be indoors when they are not home.

GBGRR is committed to our dogs, and requires that they be returned to GBGRR in the event that they cannot – at any time – remain in their new home.

PLEASE NOTE: Not all dogs appearing on the website will necessarily be available for adoption at the time an application is submitted.

Submission of your application confirms that you have read and understood the adoption procedures, and indicates your agreement to abide by GBGRR terms of adoption.
