Additional adoption info
Adopting a sight hound is a lifetime commitment. The sight hound can be expected to live in excess of 14 years. To ensure the safety and health of the sight hound, the "Adoption Requirements" must be complied with explicitly. Please do not consider adoption if you will not be able to meet this lifetime commitment or adhere to these requirements. Please also consider the financial responsibility in adopting a sight hound this responsibility does not end with the Adoption Fee: For greyhounds is $225.00/$150.00 for seniors 8+. The Adoption Fee for other sighthound such as Afghan, Borzoi, Italian Greyhound, Saluki and Whippet is $300. While sight hounds tend to be a pretty healthy breed, there are veterinary costs associated with caring for any dog.
The first thing you need to do is complete the adoption application and return it to us. We require both personal and vet (if you have one) references. After the references have been approved, you will be contacted to arrange a home visit with your dog of choice or one that matches your lifestyle. Although you may see a picture of a beautiful dog and want to adopt it, it may not be the right dog for your home. Sometimes we have multiple applications for the same dog so please remember that all dogs are placed at the discretion of FORTHEHOUNDS.
We usually will bring a dog on a home visit. The purpose of the home visit is to introduce the sight hound to your home, family and other pets. We also check for any home-related safety issues. After the home visit is completed, a recommendation is then made for adoption. If approved you will be notified and the adoption day will be arranged. The length of time between receiving your application and adopting your dog will depend on a variety of factors. Generally, the process takes about 1-2 weeks. Please be patient as we are all volunteers working hard in our spare time to place these dogs in a timely manner. If you want to know the status of your application, please feel free to contact your area representative at any time.
Note: Home visits, with the opportunity to bring available dogs, are done by a local area representative and with the dogs that are being fostered in the area. Arrangements can be made for you to meet all the hounds available.
