Humane Society of Louisiana

Animal rescue in New Orleans, LA

The Humane Society of Louisiana is a non-profit animal which was founded in New Orleans in 1988. (We are local, not affiliated with the Humane Society of United States.) From our headquarters in NOLA, we work tirelessly around the state save abused, neglected and homeless animals in areas with no other services; 50% of our state's parishes have no shelter or rescue group. As a licensed 'pet detective' agency, we investigate and rescue animals from cruelty and neglect; we also work to pass needed animal protection laws. We operate the Enoch J. Donaldson Animal Sanctuary in Mt. Hermon and the TransPUPtation Animal Transport Center in nearby Tylertown. Other programs include: Spay/LA: funding spay/neuter efforts around Louisiana, Disaster Relief, Merry Wood Wildlife Refuge and more.

Rescue FAQs

From our headquarters in New Orleans, we help save animals around the state through cruelty investigations, spay/neuter, cross country transports, disaster relief and more. To save more animals, we focus on relocating homeless Louisiana shelter pets to our private no-kill adoption partners up north. As such, we don't always have animals posted for direct private adoption. If you are a prior adopter or supporter and wish to adopt from us specifically, please contact us by phone or email or try our Magnolia chapter (Humane Society of Louisiana / Bogalusa 70438.) There are also many wonderful rescues and shelters in Louisiana who are always ready to match you with a homeless pet.

Additional adoption info

Potential adopters are advised to have a veterinarian selected. Adoption fees cover our expenses to spay/neuter, microchip and vaccinate the animal. We will apprise you of the adoption fee at the beginning of the application process. Adoption fees start at $100 for cats and kittens and start at $125 for adult dogs. Because puppies and small dogs are in great demand, fees start at $200. We may reduce or waive fees for volunteers and/or for special needs animals and/or for harder to place animals.
