Sirius Stars Canine Rescue

Animal rescue in Hanover, PA

SIRIUS STARS CANINE RESCUE (SSCR) is a small 501(c)3 non-profit dog rescue operated by an extended animal-loving family living in south central Pennsylvania. While we have always been a family of animal lovers, the seeds for our online animal rescue work were sewn during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and SSCR was henceforth officially organized in December of 2006. We do not operate a shelter per se, but rather, all of our dogs are fostered at private homes. SSCR dogs are rescued primarily from high kill animal control facilities where wonderful, happy family dogs are often euthanized simply due to overcrowding and lack of space. Although SSCR does not accept local stray animals, we will take local owner surrenders on very rare occasions when we have room. Currently, SSCR has set a self-imposed limit of rescuing 25 dogs per calendar year. This limitation helps us to make responsible decisions about when to bring new dogs into our rescue program based on our available space and our adoption rate. We are NO-KILL, meaning that all dogs which come to SSCR stay with us until they find the right home. We pride ourselves on patiently and diligently searching for the best adoption match we can find for each needy SSCR dog. We are not in a hurry to shove dogs out the door to the first person who comes along. We are looking for adopters who understand that rescue animals are never perfect, have usually been through the mill, and are "works in progress". We are searching for adopters who have just as much patience and determination to offer their new pet as they have love. Adopters who are eager to throw in the towel at the first sign of difficulty should not be considering a rescue pet in the first place. The vast majority of the dogs that come to us have a history of wandering and being picked up as a stray, so outdoor safety at the adopter's home is of particular importance to us. We will occasionally adopt suitable dogs to experienced leashwalkers, but we prefer homes with tangible fencing. We are firm in our stance of NOT adopting to homes with invisible underground fencing, homes where dogs will be tied out on tethers, and homes without tangible fencing where the adopter wants to "boundary train" their dog with visual and/or verbal cues. There is nothing more rewarding than truly giving your all to help a needy animal, but rescue animals are not for everyone, so please consider what kind of commitment level you can honestly offer an animal before you apply for any rescue pet! Remember, when you adopt a shelter pet you help to save two lives~the one you bring home and the one who takes its place!
