Labrador Friends of the South (LFS) is an incorporated, non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and adoption of homeless Labrador Retrievers in the Southeast region. We are 501(c)(3) status.
LFS relies solely on donations, fundraising events and adoption fees to function and continue saving and placing homeless Labradors. We do not receive any state or federal funding. LFS is an all volunteer organization of people who give their time, effort, and love to protect the breed from the perils of pet over-population and irresponsible pet ownership. Our ultimate goal is to help these dogs find new, loving, forever homes.
The Labradors in our program receive veterinary care and temperament testing before being eligible for adoption. Since our goal is to place our Labradors in forever homes, we consider each Labrador’s history (if any), temperament, training and other skills, and energy level. We then assess each adopting family’s preferences, home environment, lifestyle, and personality in order to make the best possible match for a successful adoption.
Labrador Retrievers and Labrador Retriever mixes are the most popular family pets in the country. Unfortunately, this statistic means that they are the most likely to end up in the animal shelters as strays or unwanted pets. Perfectly healthy, sweet- tempered Labs are put to sleep everyday, sometimes without the benefit of a painless euthanasia drug, simply because there are not enough good homes for them.
We believe that there is a misconception that these Labs and Lab mixes have behavioral problems or extensive health issues that caused their owner's rejection. The truth is that the vast majority of these dogs find themselves suddenly abandoned by their owners and the only family and home they have ever known. This often happens because their owners lacked compassion or education about being a good, responsible pet owners. Sometimes these homeless pets are victims of unlucky circumstances or tragic events that caused them to become separated from loving families.
Please open your heart and your home to a Lab who needs your help. They will show you their appreciation with lots of tail wags, body wiggles and kisses. No matter the circumstances of their past, these homeless Labs are likely to bond completely and deeply with their new caretakers and make wonderfully affectionate and loyal companions for the rest of their lives.
