Ragged Mountain Dogs

Dog rescue in Sperryville, VA

Ragged Mountain Dogs is an all-breed canine rescue located at the foot of picturesque Old Rag Mountain in the Blue Ridge of Virginia.

RMD was founded by Lisa Reid, who is the trainer and "mom" to most of our dogs. In 1988 Lisa helped to form the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League, which operated the shelter for Rappahannock County. In 1994, through the tireless efforts of RAWL, the shelter became the first county-owned "no kill" shelter in the state of Virginia. In addition, no animal was adopted out until they were spayed or neutered.

In 1997, Lisa left RAWL and began working with a professional dog trainer. Three years later, she struck out on her own and began to house and train dogs for the SPCA of Northern Virginia. In Lisa's words:

"I was introduced to the plight of homeless dogs in 1990.

It was my dream to be able to build a housing situation for many of the animals that needed extra help in order to make them more adoptable. An emphasis on maintaining their emotional stability was first and foremost a part of my plan. After two years of working with a local trainer/behaviorist, I made the move and went out on my own. From the years I had spent working with shelter dogs, as well as the five years I had spent working in an animal hospital, I was able to create an environment that caters to the emotional and behavioral issues of all the animals in my care. Through routine crating at night, the use of a potty yard, and daytime pens and play yards, I am able to provide the structure my guys need to keep them happy and healthy."

In 2004, Lisa formed her own rescue organization, Ragged Mountain Dogs, in an effort to help even more dogs. She was joined by a small band of seasoned volunteers who share her philosophy and love of canines. Our goals are to Rescue dogs in need, Rehab (both physically and behaviorally) those rescued dogs, Rehome those that are adoptable, and Retire those that are too old, or are otherwise unadoptable. Aiding us in those goals is the world's best veterinarian, Dr. Johnny Clark of Blue Mountain Animal Clinic.

All of our dogs are current on vaccinations, spayed/neutered, and microchipped. Currently, RMD has 24 retired dogs (the youngest is 9 years old), several are being rehabbed, and the remainder are available for adoption. We are awaiting approval of our 501(c)(3) non-profit status.

Rescue FAQs

Because we do pre-placement home visits, we have a limited adoption area, generally Northern Virginia. If you are interested in one of our dogs, though, please email or call to see if a volunteer is available to do a home visit in your area.

Additional adoption info

We are aware that many other rescue groups allow adopters to take their chosen dog home with them immediately, without checking references. However, we are committed to ensuring that each dog is placed in the best possible home. For that reason, we follow the guidelines and procedures described below.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To ensure the best possible match between adopter and pet, we ask that you read and understand the information below regarding our adoption policies and procedures. You will be asked to sign a legal contract when adopting your pet and you must pay an adoption fee/donation. The fees go directly to Ragged Mountain Dogs to help pay for medical expenses, spaying/neutering, obedience training and boarding.

Please keep in mind that we will not place a dog in a home if any of the following conditions are present:

—The prospective home currently has an unspayed or unneutered pet.
—The dog will be left outside unattended at any time.
—The dog is intended as a gift.
—Puppies less than 6 months old will not be placed in homes with children under 4.
—Puppies less than 6 months old will not be placed in homes where the puppy will regularly be left alone for more than 4 hours per day.

Once placed, we reserve the right to check on the dog at any time to ensure its wellbeing. If any condition of the Adoption Contract has been violated, or if it is the opinion of Ragged Mountain Dogs that the environment is unsafe, we reserve the right to remove the dog from the home. If at any time you cannot keep the dog, you must return it to Ragged Mountain Dogs and not to another individual or shelter.

Here is the adoption procedure:

1. Selection - It is important that you consider the following:
—Size - if you rent, does your apartment or home have stated size limits? (Landlord approval is required). Have you considered what size of dog best suits your available space and lifestyle?
—Age - Dogs of different ages have very different requirements, make sure you know what these are (e.g. puppies and older dogs require extra care and attention).
—Temperament - Does the dog have a temperament that would be suitable for your family?
—Compatibility - Is the dog recommended for children and other pets?
—Energy level - Does your schedule allow for providing the amount of exercise recommended?
—Special needs - Will this dog require special care?
2. Application - The purpose of the application is to match the dog's needs with the appropriate environment.
3. Home Visit - In-home interview to ensure that you can provide a safe, loving environment.
—All members of the household are required to attend.
—Care and behavioral training principles will be discussed.
3. Pre-adoption Trial Contract - A two-week trial placement designed to test for compatibility.
—Sign two-week trial placement contract (may be terminated by either party during this period).
4. Sign Final Adoption Contract - —Finalizes adoption.
—Receive medical records.
—Fee/donation of $200 per dog is due
