The Canine Connection

Dog rescue in Gladwin, MI

The Canine Connection was created four years ago as our local Animal Shelter's staff was cut in half and are only open three hours per day, five days a week. Seeing the need to offer an alternative to "dumping puppies" or "family pets" at the shelter, I decided to start my own private rescue service for our county and several of the neighboring counties. Since obtaining a website on Petfinder.com, we have adopted out over 400 puppies and dogs. There's a number of cats and kittens in that number as well - even though we try to stick with "canines, we love all animals, especially those in need! We are very proud of this as most of these guys were either on death row or headed to shelters, or at shelters where their fate was not so good. Most of the local shelters around our area are over-crowded and under-staffed which results in a lot of "death". All of our "rescues" are current on all shots, dewormed, and health checked by our wonderful vet clinic in Roscommon. Our rescues are provided with any medical care that is necessary and without the caring staff at the Roscommon Animal Clinic, we could not financially continue to save these wonderful friends. All of our rescues are deemed healthy and happy when they leave The Canine Connection. Yes, we have had our heartbreaks with parvo and whatever along the way, but overall, we have had wonderful success and have met so many wonderful, caring people throughout our endeavor to "make a difference". We are not a non-profit organization, but we certainly ARE NOT A "PROFIT" organization either. Anyone who thinks they can make money doing this, is sadly mistaken.... My husband and I are both retired and on a fixed income and most all of our personal income goes to support the puppies and dogs as the adoption fees do not come close to covering the expenses involved. We have 20 rescue dogs here that have either been returned from adoptions for one reason or another, or were never adopted! These guys have all been spayed/neutered and are current on everything and must also be supported. We have worked them into our lives, so they too can have security and a good life right along with our "chosen" canine family members

Additional adoption info

Adoption fees are normally anywhere from $75.00 to $500, depending on each individual situation. When we take a litter of pups from a private party, we have the mother dog spayed from the initial adoption fees and if the father is also owned by the family, we try to get him neutered as well. This helps us eliminate future "unwanted pups" down the road from the same people.

Most of our pups require a secure fenced in area (electronic is okay for some breeds), all of our rescues must be house pets and considered members of your family and an executed spay/neuter contract is required at time of adoption (puppies under 6 months). We do not recommend spaying and neutering our puppies until they are 6 months of age. We try to have all of our pups/dogs that are 6 months and older spayed or neutered by The Canine Connection and then we hope to recoup "most of our expenses" on these dogs, which hasn't happened yet! The adoption fee for puppies/dogs under 6 months of age does not include a refund for spaying and neutering as this money helps us continue in our efforts to save more puppies and dogs and to support the existing rescues in our organization.
