Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Louie and Zane came in as strays; we held them extra time before listing them for adoption because they are such great dogs, it's hard to believe their owner isn't looking for them. The time has come, though, for these beautiful, loving dogs to find forever homes. (Zane has gone home, but Louie is still searching for his person).
We are guessing the boys are brothers, and are between 1 - 2 years old. They have strong Great Pyrenees traits, we are guessing mixed with herding dogs (Australian Shepherd and/or Border Collie, perhaps). Louie is the smaller (well, really, "less large" is more accurate) of the two, we are guessing he could weigh as much as 100 pounds (our vet's scale was malfunctioning so we could not get an accurate reading). He is a happy, loving dog - we wonder if perhaps these boys "flunked out" as guardian breed dogs, because both of them clearly prefer the company of humans to hanging around outside... they actually want to come back into the building during their daily exercise time, and would much rather lie at our feet (or on them) than patrol the dog yard.
Louie is very people-oriented, he always seems to come right away when called and just loves a good belly rub. He came in with a couple of issues that have been addressed at the veterinarian: he hads "weepy" eyes, which turned out to be entropion (at least in the left eye); the vet corrected the eyelids on the left eye, and is hopeful that the right eye will be fine without surgery. He also had a hind leg limp, which the vet was concerned might be a knee injury (she did not think it was hip-related). We put him on a restricted activity regimen with leash-walks only back on 9/5, and by 9/9 his limp was almost completely gone. This is GREAT news, because it indicates the limp was caused by a minor strain, rather than a major ligament injury. We'll be keeping Louie on leash walks for another week to be sure he's fully healed, but don't expect any long term problems related to the previous limp.
Both of these dogs seem friendly toward other dogs; they are fairly good on leash, not too much pulling, and are both very attentive to their handlers. They like to "hold hands" and "shake" and are very gentle when accepting treats by hand. We think they would enjoy the family life, though may knock over toddlers due to their large size and enthusiasm! They are very social dogs, will need moderate exercise (they are not jogging or agility dogs), and will benefit from regular brushing - even 5 minutes a day will help get their coats into tip-top shape. Louie would do well as an only dog, or integrating with another family dog. He has been curious about the shelter kitties when we visit their screened porches on our leash walks, but not overly focused or intense in his attentions, so he may do well with a dog-friendly family cat.
In spite of the guardian breed we see in them, these are NOT dogs that are going to be content to be left alone watching the flock; they want to be where the people are.
They seem to be housetrained, and while they could benefit from some formal obedience training, they are polite and respectful dogs, not hyper or unruly.
Louie comes with a 30-day money-back trial adoption period.
Spay/neuter, worming, microchip and all age-appropriate shots are always completed before placement, and are included in the adoption fee (suggested minimum $75; more gratefully accepted!)
Can't come to Republic? Don't let that stop you! We have monthly transports to both the Seattle area and Spokane, delivering adopted pets to their new owners. If you can add a little to your payment to help us cover our volunteer driver's expenses, that would be great!
