My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Let me introduce you to Blue. This beauty is a 1yr old female Border Collie/Catahoula Leopard Dog mix and she is a unique and lovely medium sized dog that we got from a rural pound where she was an unclaimed stray. Blue weighs approx 40lbs and we would like to see her finish out at around 45lbs. She has an athletic build and is big enough to accompany you on any activity you want to participate in, but not so big as to be cumbersome. Blue has a black and white coat that actually has brindle markings in the black colouring when you look closely, but her most striking feature is her ice blue eyes. You will notice that her one eye is totally blue while the other is part blue, part brown. This is a Catahoula Leopard dog feature and it is called a “cracked eye”. Her eyes are the first thing everyone notices about Blue as they just draw you in. But what is the best thing about Blue are her sweet and friendly nature and the ease in which she settles into your life. Blue came into her foster home like she has been there forever and is such an easy dog to live with. She is housetrained and picked up on crate training quickly as well. She now runs to her crate awaiting her treat when it is time for us to leave the house or bed time. Blue is a good dog in need of a great home to call her forever home.

Blue’s favourite activities are playing in the yard, chasing birds that land in the yard, and going for walks. Blue is an active dog that can keep up with whatever you are doing. She would be an excellent jogging companion if you are looking for a running partner. Blue is active, but not hyper, and in the house she is calm and quiet. Blue needs a family that will exercise her daily. Both Border Collies and Catahoula’s are working dogs so they need to be active to be happy. If you are not already an active person please do not consider Blue. She needs a family that is already outdoorsy and enjoys long walks, hiking, and outdoor play. A dog should compliment your life. Far too often people pick breeds of dogs that do not suit their lifestyle which either ends in a sad and frustrated dog and owner, or the dog being given away or abandoned. We will not let this happen to Blue. She is such a great combination of athleticism, smarts and good nature that she deserves the perfect fit for her forever home. At the end of the day Blue loves to hang out on the couch with you if you allow it. She likes a comfy dog bed to rest on. She is also a bit independent in that she doesn’t need to follow you room to room in the house. She is comfortable with you being out of sight but will check up on you if she deems it has been too long. Blue will also go off to the other room for a peaceful sleep if she is tired and just wants to crash for a bit. She is not a demanding dog and will take all the affection you want to dole out but isn’t constantly bugging for your attention. She is happy to lie close by while you are on the computer or watching TV. She would be a good dog for someone who works at home as she is quiet and peaceful in the home and not prone to disturbances or rowdiness.

Blue is being fostered with other dogs and she is quite playful and friendly with dogs. She would do very well with another young and playful dog as a companion. She would also do well being the only dog and getting all the love and attention as long as she had regular contact with dog friends to keep up her socialization skills. She is also being fostered with cats and after being told that she is not allowed to chase them she pretty much ignores them. Having said that, her foster cats do not react to dogs and are very used to having dogs around. I would not recommend Blue go to a home with a nervous cat as the temptation to chase a cat that runs from her or is hissing and causing a fuss may be too much for her to resist. Blue is not being fostered with children. We feel that she would be a fine dog for kids over 12yrs old. Blue is very friendly and affectionate but she is a young dog herself and may get too excited with the shrieks and squeals of young children at play. We do not feel she would be aggressive at all but she may want to join in on the excitement and kids and dogs play quite differently. Blue is a herding dog and instinct to herd would surely kick in with the excitement of young children running. For these reasons alone we are looking for an adult home for Blue or one with kids that are more aware of the responsibilities of a dog and can understand how to properly behave around a dog.

Blue travels well in the car and settles down quietly for the ride. We have found that on trips over a half hour she sometimes gets car sick so it is best advised to not feed her before a longer trip. But for short jaunts she is just fine. She walks well on a leash and is learning not to pull. We are training Blue in basic obedience and are looking for a family that will continue her training at obedience school. Blue is such a smart dog that it would be a complete shame not to take advantage of that and train her very well. A quality obedience school will allow her and her new family to learn new skills with the distractions of other dogs and people around. Obedience training will also help build a strong bond between Blue and her new family. Once well trained Blue would be an excellent candidate for any dog sports and in particular we feel she would make a great agility dog. If you have interest in dog sports, Blue is your girl!

Blue is an all around great dog. She will fit into most home environments although a house with a large fenced back yard will be ideal. As long as she is properly exercised Blue will be happy pretty much anywhere. What she really wants is a lot of love and affection and a family that will commit to her and never let her be abandoned again. She deserves that and so much more!

An adoption donation of $400 is required. This helps cover our costs for veterinary care including spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, heartworm test, deworming and whatever else the dog may require.
