Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Duchess was rescued from a southern high kill shelter. As such, her breed mix is completely a best-guess! We cannot guarantee breed! Duchess is approximately 4 years old, and is full grown at about 20 lbs. She is an adorable, happy little girl who is longing for her own forever family for the new year!
Duchess is a spayed female, fully vetted, completely housebroken, microchipped, and gets along well with other dogs who are bigger than her. She can be a bit dominant to smaller dogs if allowed. Duchess will be happiest with an experienced dog owner who understands the importance of being a good leader. She is highly intelligent, responsive and obedient and VERY trainable.
Duchess enjoys playing, especially with bigger dogs but is generally not the one to initiate the play. In fact, her foster mom says she borders on couch potato :) If you are interested in adopting her be prepared to spend hours cuddling up on the sofa together and snuggling in bed!
Here is her foster mom's most recent update:
Duchess is very much a lovable dog and will spend every second cuddled up next to you. She knows how to play with other dogs but I don't believe she understands how to play with humans. I also have another dog myself who loves to play so he tends to get in the way. I believe Duchess would do fine by herself [for 8-9 hours], as long as she has a bone or treat to keep her occupied. She is home alone (but with another dog) from 9-5 everyday and has behaved very well (ie: furniture isn't chewed up, no bathroom accidents, does not get into the trash, doesn't chew on random objects left on the ground). If I had to guess, she would probably just sleep in your bed for most of the day.
I am sure she would love nothing but attention when you are home. She does great on walks and is learning that she is to stay by your left leg and heel when you stop. I don't think she should be taken to a dog park until she [is consistently reliable] around other dogs. For Duchess, I highly recommend a training program with a reputable dog trainer (not PetSmart or other group classes) so she not only learns basic commands, but learns how to think for herself in stressful situations (such as the dog parks) and behaves appropriately. She is a very easy dog to take care of and doesn't ask for much other than to by your side taking a nap while you are watching TV or reading.
I wanted to mention that she is not much of a barker, especially when you enter through the door. She is a very quiet dog.
Interested adopters please email mjsanimalsanctuary@gmail.com and request an adoption application. We screen all adopters, do references checks and vet references. We also require a home visit and an adoption contract to be signed. There is an adoption fee.
