My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

DANIELLE PUMPKIN--SHIH TZU--1 YR--FEMALE

On Monday, October 1, 2012 around 9pm at night, Charles Henderson Animal Rescue received a call from a Good Samaritan who had found a dog who she had seen get hit by a car and then settle under a bunch of leaves next to a tree. She said she thought the dog had a broken leg and couldn’t walk. Immediately I called my vet friend who owns One Love Animal Hospital on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY to solicit his help. He was already closed for the night but he instantaneously agreed to help out and open his vet hospital to try and help this poor doggie if we could.

Upon arrival at the location, I found a dog that was in really bad shape. Firstly, I couldn’t believe the dog looked as bad as she did. Secondly, I thought for sure that this dog was on her last leg. She was totally & completely unresponsive. I notified the Good Samaritan that I was going to take her immediately to the vet to try and save her life but that there may be the possibility that she may have to be humanely euthanized if her medical condition was insurmountable.

I drove quickly to pick up my great friend Dr. Ken Humphries at his house to take the doggie over to One Love Animal Hospital where Ken opened up his hospital after hours to try and save this precious doggie’s life. One of Dr. Ken’s associates, Dr. Suzy, was still at the hospital, finishing up her work for the evening. Dr. Suzy immediately dropped everything she was doing and rolled up her sleeves to help this poor little helpless doggie. This dog was the worse matted dog case that Ken, Suzy & I had ever seen.

It took Dr. Ken, Dr. Suzy & myself 3 hours straight to remove all the matting and shave this poor little girl down so she would cease being tormented and tortured any longer from the constant pain that matted dogs go through. The matting was so bad that this helpless puppy couldn’t even walk anymore and the matting had started to cut off the circulation in her legs. She had localized cists growing in some spots on her lower legs and feet. And she stank like shit and piss literally. The poor little baby had been left like this since she was born. We named her Danielle Pumpkin. Danielle after the woman who had initially found her and Pumpkin by my daughter Charlie and Dr. Suzy.

The docs took one look at her teeth and although I had previously assumed that this dog was old and feeble, they quickly surmised that Danielle was between 9 months and a year old at best. Because she had been so badly neglected, we didn’t think that she had a microchip but checked anyways and, lo and behold, Danielle was microchipped but because the microchipped hadn’t been registered, the trail to who may have been the perpetrator and committed this unconscionable and henous act of cruelty and neglect went cold and ended there. The great news is that because of the actions of several individuals, Danielle Pumpkin was saved and has been completely cleaned up and we are now searching for her new forever home.

So far at the vets office where Danielle is staying at the moment, she has been nothing short of super sweet & super awesome according to Dr. Humphries and his staff. It takes a tribe to raise a child and a group of concerned, caring & compassionate people to help the helpless and those less fortunate. It was Danielle’s lucky day as her world has been completely changed for the better. Danielle has gone from the outhouse to the penthouse thanks to the concerted efforts collectively of Danielle Martin-Alston, Dr. Ken & Dr. Suzy at One Love Animal Hospital and Charles Henderson Animal Rescue. I am so honored to be apart of and associated with such amazing and wonderful human beings.
