Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Loving, lighthearted, and a lovely girl to boot - meet Miss Brandywine! Rescued from a Colorado shelter, this beautiful 2 year old BC mix is as loving as the day is long. Even while in the stressful shelter environment, this sunny girl continued to greet every human who came her way as a friend. And who can resist her elegant profile and adorable fluffy ears? If you are looking for a dog who is sure to make a world class loving companion, who loves nothing more than basking in attention from people, Brandy can’t WAIT to meet you!!
Indeed humans are her biggest love, and Brandy is surely at her best with people. She is quite the snuggler and would absolutely love to spend the day with her head resting in a human lap, happy to soak up all of the love and attention she can receive. Given her love of all humans, Brandy may make a wonderful therapy dog candidate. She can also be a silly, playful lass, and loves to throw her toys up in the air and catch them! Brandy also enjoys a game of fetch, and loves to use her nose. She would be a great candidate for nose work or other dog sport. When she is given a “job”, whether nose work or simple agility, she prances with pride. While she is not particularly herdy – we think she is mixed with retriever - Brandy is too focused on cats and too interested in chasing them to be safely placed in a home with felines, so a cat-free home will be necessary for her. Overall she’s a moderate energy girl, who will be happiest with a good chunk of exercise daily, but will not need hours and hours to be able to settle down.
Although she’s for the most part quite a level-headed girl, for some reason, Brandy developed dog reactivity from fear while in the shelter. With non-force, positive reinforcement training and behavior modification since arriving in foster care, she has made great strides in controlling her reactions to other dogs. She is relaxed and playful around medium sized to larger sized calm confident male dogs. However, she should not be placed with smaller dogs and will absolutely benefit from her new family continuing her training. We have confidence that Brandy will be able to be tolerant of other dogs (she already has a new best friend in a playful, older male in her foster home) and will be able to function peacefully in a public setting under the attention of a kind, wise and experienced human. Given the unpredictable nature of interactions at dog parks, Brandy is definitely not a candidate for that kind of social setting, but will need a home that can provide structured, supervised, and managed canine interactions instead.
It should come as no surprise that given her love of people, combined with being food motivated, that Brandy is a joy to teach! She is an eager student and has already learned some basic manners such as sit, down, stay and settle. She’s housetrained and cratetrained and walks nicely on leash with a no pull harness. She’s working on coming when called and, of course, controlling herself when meeting new dogs. Brandy will benefit from adopters willing to continue with her basic manners training, build her confidence, and help her learn how to behave appropriately around her fellow canines. Positive reinforcement methods are a must for this sweet girl!
Brandy will thrive in a home with people who have the time to give her love and attention, and she will return that love a thousandfold. If you are looking for a sweet, moderate energy, loving companion, who needs just a little help to be her best, Brandy will work her way quickly into your heart and stay by your side forever.
