Here's what the humans have to say about me:
My name is Darcy and I am an 11 month old Basenji mix. Darcy is very sweet and affectionate. She loves to cuddle. She LOVES other dogs but would be best suited with a higher energy dog. She does have a lot of energy so she will also need someone who is active and willing to exercise her. Once she has burned off energy she just wants to be with you. She LOVES tennis balls. She taught herself how to play fetch. My dogs have no interest in fetch so we generally do not play fetch with the fosters. One day she randomly decided to bring us a tennis ball, we threw it for her and she decided that was her favorite game! She brings the ball right back to you and will drop it in your hand. If you are not paying attention she will pick the ball up and toss it at you until you realize she is waiting for you to throw it. She can be vocal. When you first get home she will bark her head off while you are heading towards the door to go out. She also whines if she wants attention and you stop petting her. She is all but housebroken. She will bark at the door to go out most of the time. Sometimes she just sits at the door and if we do not see her she will then have an accident. She is nervous and unsure of herself at times and will need someone willing to continue building her confidence. She is showing a protective side when she is in the house. Last night she was in the breeze way with me and Ben came up to the door leading into the breeze way (this was when she first came into the house) and she growled/barked and had her hackles go up. He walked into the breeze way and she was absolutely fine with him. I think she is just being a dog and was "protecting" me from the man standing at the door. She will bark if she sees someone walking by or an animal outside. I will correct her for barking and she well whine as if to say "ohh but I wanna!" I am pretty sure she was either an outside dog or left in a basement with little interaction with people. Which may be why she is nervous with strangers. What little interaction she had with people was not good. She was probably abused. If she does something bad (like chew something or take a toy from one of the other dogs) and I firmly say her name she immediately drops to the floor. The first time Ben corrected her she dropped and growled at him while squinting like she expected to be hit. She does not really do this with us any more, but has been with us long enough to know we are not going to hurt her. I think her "fear" of strangers is mostly towards men but now that she has been with us and trusts us she has been fine with everyone we have introduced her to.
She is a really good dog who has such a sweet personality but is going to need a little work. She needs someone who is active and willing to help build her confidence and trust. Are you ready for the challenge? If so please go to www.atailtotell.com and fill out her application.
