Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Bogart is a handsome little man who we think is part Cocker, Pekingese and possibly Spaniel. He weighs about 17 lbs and is about 1.5 yrs old. Bogart loves everyone and is great with other dogs. We don't think he was ever in a home until he got to foster as everything seemed so foreign to him. It took him a day to realize that if he cuddled up on the couch with you he could get some great belly rubs, he wasn't used to a leash at all and he didn't even know what a treat was when it was first offered to him. He also wasn't housetrained but has caught on to that quickly as well. Now his eyes twinkle and he seems to always have a smile on his face!
Bogart was definitely neglected in that he never received heartworm preventative! When tested for them he tested a light positive. This by no means is a death sentence and he is young and otherwise healthy so should live to be just as old as any other dog. There are two ways of treating heartworms. The first is with injections of immeticide (arsenic). This treatment is very painful and can be risky since all worms are killed at once and can go to the lungs. The other method is by using Ivermectin which is found in the preventative known as Heartguard. Heartguard not only prevents heartworms but will kill any in the system as well. It takes a little longer to rid a dog completely of the worms but it is much safer for them as it is killing them more slowly. This is the treatment Bogarts vet has recommended and they will provide a prescription for it. Since all dogs need to be on preventative anyway, this shouldn't pose a problem.
This dog has been neutered, received rabies and DHPP vaccinations and de-wormed.
