ADOPTED 3-12-2011
This adorably sweet and petite Golden Retriever/Duck Toller female, CALI is but one of 13 adult dogs our rescue took into its care upon receiving word that they were living life outside either chained to a tree or penned in enclosures open to the harsh and brutal elements in the woods of Picayune, Mississippi. There were also 3 very young puppies we rescued that have fortunately all been adopted. While our rescue took 16 dogs total, there were still 24 other dogs remaining. Fortunately, other local rescues stepped in to help the rest of the dogs, and just in time. It was a week before Christmas and the Deep South was experiencing one of the coldest winters ever, so there was no time to spare. Good thing there was a lot of love in the air and the desire to help reigned supreme.
Whether an authentic "hoarder" or a well-intentioned citizen turned overwhelmingly incompetent, the gentleman requesting our help clearly was very fond of the dogs. We know this because all the dogs--although not vetted and left outside in the elements-- ALL responded to him favorably and with tails wagging vigorously when he approached them. Sadly, these dogs were kept in a densely wooded area, and when asked, it was readily admitted that he didn't think he had to give any of the dogs heartworm prevention because "their hair is long, and no mosquito is going to get in there." Well, we know that's not true, unfortunately. And after a long education and a promise from the gentleman that he would take NO MORE DOGS, the dogs were hauled off, responsibly vetted and altered. All the dogs except one young adolescent and the three puppies because of their young ages were heartworm positive, and needed to be treated to rid their precious bodies of that horrific and potentially deadly parasite. While heartworm is not a death sentence, it IS completely avoidable, and a monthly pill could have prevented the dogs from ever having to undergo this physical malady in the first place. Dog owners have a HUGE RESPONSIBILITY to be good stewards of their charges, and in this instance, it is quite obvious that neglect and ignorance were the issues at hand. When that happens, our humanity is supposed to guide us to help those who need it most. At least this man understood that he could not properly take care of the dogs and asked for help. It is not our place to judge, really -- but to lend a hand to the hopeless and the voiceless.
2011 heralds ALL THINGS GOOD AND WONDERFUL for these dogs, though, to be sure! We are celebrating the near end of the heartworm protocol, and the dogs all did marvelously with their treatment. Of course, the dogs will require monthly prevention hereafter as any dog does, but should have no complications at all from the treatment. With hearts clear and FULL OF HOPE AND POSSIBILITY, they Mississippi Mob is ready for adoption and to leap into your hearts and home. So, if you want to make a difference this year to a deserving dog in need and are fond of Golden Retrievers and Duck Tollers, LOOK NO MORE! These dogs are all so sweet and resilient and enjoy life to the fullest!
CALI is approximately 3-4 years old and is 30 pounds of absolute sweetness personified. While she had never been vetted prior to her December rescue, she was also riddled with internal parasites: hookworms, tapeworms, whipworms and the heartworms that were mentioned already. And yet, CALI is the mother of the three puppies who were also rescued and she was caring for them diligently and lovingly then, as she is now -- despite the fact that her own body was so weak and in need of treatment. She and her puppies are all happy, healthy love bugs. In the next week, CALI will be finished with her heartworm treatment and will require no more vetting other than her monthly flea and HW prevention.
The smallest of the 13 adult dogs rescued, CALI is also the most social and loving. Not only is she affectionate, she is playful, alert, self-confident and bright. What's more? She's an incredible mother. Our benevolent and deeply compassionate rescuer who has faithfully dedicated the last two months to caring for the Mississippi Mob remarks that "CALI is in the mother-teaching stage. She is so alert and happy with a moderate activity level and is just a wonderful role model for her puppies." One of the sweetest parts of CALI is that she clacks and grins and clicks with her mouth to get attention in a very cute way that is simply irresistible.
CALI is so easily trainable that we suspect she will acclimate to her new home in no time, and will capture your soul as much as she has ours. There's nothing more delightful or rewarding to see rescued dogs blossom and flourish with the devoted patience and understanding they require to move beyond the uncertainties that plagued their former days. CALI enjoys romping with the other dogs and chases them and loves to be chased equally by the other four-legged. The petite girl wonder will not need an excessive amount of exercise, but she's up for about anything you want her to engage in with you or other dogs no matter the size or age or gender. And that's a good thing indeed!
CALI behaves well with children and seeks their attention, though we're aiming for a family with children over four years of age to ensure CALI can get the attention she needs. For once, CALI needs to be the center of attention and deserves the loving devotion that she's so lavished upon her puppies. While CALI has not been fostered with cats, she has been around them at the veterinarian's office and did not pay any attention to any of them -- a good sign, too! However, if a cat runs -- ALL DOGS are likely be instigated by that prey drive to chase, but not necessarily harm them. It is always prudent to be mindful that rescued dogs -- and ALL DOGS -- must be monitored closely around other animals, especially at the outset. CALI also eats with two other dogs and has no food aggression whatsoever. One good thing was that these animals were always fed regularly, so they don't have many of the issues we see when we rescue stray animals who have had to fight for their food and scour dumps and garbage cans for nutrients. Although these dogs, especially CALI while she was pregnant, could have done so much better with so more appropriate care, they did get love and food regularly -- as much as the former "owner" could provide. But now, we've promised these dogs NOTHING BUT TRUST, HEALTH and HAPPINESS -- and we're betting that's what they will reciprocate to their two-legged families and potential other four-leggeds with whom they will share their days bright-eyed and full of love!
CALI has not had an accident in her kennel, but she has never been crated either. She's learning to walk on a lead every day and makes remarkable progress with anything that is asked of her. CALI even enjoys the car more and more every time she goes for a ride. More exposure and a reliable leader who can make her feel safe and secure, will allow her to confidently engage in all things.
Like all rescue dogs, CALI needs a safe and comfortable environment. Rapid approaches, yelling and screaming, slamming of doors? NOPE! CALI just cowers -- not in fear, but it doesn't bring out the best in her either. She would be happy in an active, but not chaotic household with a fenced yard and someone home much of the time. Given how social a dog CALI is, it would be ideal if she had another dog to share her days with too, but if her human(s) are around more than not, and she'd have the chance to interact with other dogs regularly, that would be okay, too. What we now is that CALI will continue to thrive and grow and blossom into the amazingly special dog she's always been -- just now out of the woods and cared for on every level. The only thing missing? A forever home of her own, and she deserves that and then some. If you think you might be a great match for CALI, fill out an application today! This sweet, petite pretty little thing of all things great, Golden and Toller, will not be available long! We honor all involved in the process, and if a proper application is filled out, a member of our rescue organization will be in touch with you immediately after a vet check has been completed. HAPPY DOGS MAKE HAPPY ADOPTERS -- so we consider your needs and situation as much as our dogs, but they are, indeed, our first priority as rescuers!
OUR DOGS ARE MICRO-CHIPPED AND
READY TO BE PART OF YOUR FAMILY TODAY!
About Our Rescue
These dogs deserve all of our attention, and in Rescue Dog Village, we are committed to our adopters and our dogs equally. We offer full disclosure and hope to make the best matches possible. Please know our adoption fees never cover our expenses. We rely on the generosity of our adopters and supporters to help us help the dogs.
Our rescue is ONLY in the business of offering FULL DISCLOSURE to adopters, and expects and hopes to engage your questions and concerns fully. We owe it to the dogs we rescue and all the wonderful families/adopters who might consider welcoming our charges into their hearts and home. Our dogs are waiting for that ideal forever home where they will be cherished as deserving family members. It's sad these second chances are even necessary for these dogs, but we are committed to them and will devote the time and energy to their rehoming, and not just MOVE them to save more dogs. We diligently and responsibly seek good matches as we don't want to re-home the dog again. These animals have already endured more than they should have, and through no fault of their own. It behooves us to be honest and forthright, and we appreciate the same in return from applicants. It's that winning combination of reciprocal trust and respect that allows for successful placements to be made. Happy adopters translate to happy dogs, and that's our goal!
Our rescue volunteers will be more than honored to be in touch with you directly and promptly, after receiving your application and conducting a mandatory a veterinarian check. If you have never owned a dog before, please submit your application regardless, and we will be in touch with you as soon as possible. TAKE NOTE YOU SHOULD CHECK YOUR SPAM AS SOME RESPONSES FROM US WIND UP THERE WE'VE DISCOVERED. Also, take care to contact your veterinarian to let them know a member of rescue will be inquiring about your pet history!
Thank you for respecting that we all donate our time to saving these animals, and understand we value your philanthropic and compassionate desire to help be part of the rescue team. That said, you'll understand why we are committed to the well-being of our charges and consider this veterinarian check mandatory. If you are a first-time dog owner, we will work with you every step of the way! ADVOCACY AND EDUCATION ARE AS MUCH A PART OF RESPONSIBLE RESCUE AS ADOPTION! And it takes a RESCUE VILLAGE to help the most dogs possible in a thorough manner to ensure success on all fronts, and then some! It is an awful feeling to fail a dog, and we can't continue rescue if we don't do everything we can to ensure good matches for the dogs and tender families who might adopt them. THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING.
Although we are an extremely small rescue group, we understand and respect your family's eagerness to be in touch and learn as much as you can about the dogs you are considering adopting. Our very experienced and devoted trainer will be happy to share all aspects of OUR RESCUE DOGS to determine compatibility once you've submitted your application, and another of our volunteers will explain the whole process of our rescue and answer any questions you might have as well
If you have the time and love to offer this extremely bright dog who can make you laugh for hours at his antics,
