My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Notes: Charlie - male/neutered black and tan coonhound - 3 years of age - black and tan short coat

Our organization enjoins all dog lovers and especially hound lovers to help us get Charlie home.

To guide us in our efforts, Charlie has provided some excellent tips, and we offer these suggestions on his houndly behalf:

Charlie would love a fenced yard, and most especially a dog door so he is not intrusive nor tedious in asking for the human door to be opened.

Charlie would be a kind, tolerant, and affectionate companion to any and all dogs already residing in a home.

Charlie would ask for little more than a soft blanket or dog bed indoors, where he would repose happily and contentedly. However, his fondest hope would be realized if he could also have permission to join his adopter(s) wherever THEY are seated in the coziest proximity possible, pressed up against them. This is his happiest and highest sense of togetherness.

Charlie would be grateful if his adopter(s) did not object to his "voicing" like a beautiful bagpipe on occasion, as he was designed by Nature to do. He would promise to confine this serenade to one or two short sessions per day, and he will even perform on command - blissfully and with his whole heart. He will not bark or bay reactively, except for the UPS man.

We have learned that there are, and will always be, a bit of the mountains and the glorious remembrance of moonlit trails in Charlie's blood. He has come to a curious place in his life in which he holds a firm foothold in two worlds - one the world of caring, gentle household life, and one the rugged wilderness of his Appalachian past.

Thus, he is not really a suitable choice for a townhouse or a neighborhood in which the homes are located close together, because of his voice. He is however far beyond the days where he would exist with resigned fortitude in a cold outdoor kennel waiting to be of use on the random coon hunt. We suspect that Charlie was in fact abandoned because he was a failed hunting dog.

He made his transitions into our human domesticity without a hitch; he is perfectly housetrained, and has never been chewy or destructive. He is calm and reliable in the house on every level (he asks that we please note again that the UPS man is a strong exception to this rule), and in fact, he is a loyal dog who is capable of deep bonding.

A grand cuddler, Charlie is a wonderfully communicative dog whose soft, low gargling sounds express moments of supreme pleasure with life. There is no more beautiful portrait than the one Charlie presents daily, stretched out blissfully on his dog bed; he is a very handsome dog.

But he is not a dog who has given over completely to the easy chair. Charlie's natural talents and instincts are part and parcel of the wonderful dog he is, and he will still track and run with an elegance and ease that are breathtaking. For a cat, although he has never harmed one, Charlie's predilection for tracking is an ordeal, so we would recommend that Charlie go to a home that does not have cats.

Charlie does not have the cleverness of many dogs who can navigate the busy and often hectic lifestyles of their humans; he is akin to a meat and potatoes guy who does not channel surf and gives thanks when each day is pretty much like the one before. He would be a blessing to a home that would love a companion of great affability and genuine, naive sweetness; a fellow without guile, and one who, in his own way, will always believe he can still throw the football.

So if you also are, by design or fate, living in a world of routine and order, but still rejoice in the knowledge that you are the master of a back yard that is your kingdom, secure in your belief that it is okay to use your outside voice when you are outside, and still given to adventures of the spirit that make a path through the woods an irresistible frontier, Charlie would not only be your best friend, but your greatest champion.

We WILL accept out of area applications for Charlie.
