My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our blushing beauty, Iris, is a striking girl, who was just plucked from Big City Animal Control, after paying her dues as a city stray. Iris appeared to be shy and fearful in the shelter, but, nevertheless, she received great behavior evaluations and was very easy to handle under extreme duress. She was on her way to the Shelter adoption program when she came down with the obligatory cough, and was rerouted to the euthanasia list. We are thrilled to have her join us.

Iris doesn't quite know what to make of the rescue process. She seems slow to adjust to change, and the trick with her has been reigniting her puppy mojo. She was just 10 months old when she arrived at the shelter as a stray. She had to fend for herself on the road, rather than enjoy the security and structure that well-raised puppies receive. Now one year old, Iris has blossomed into a much more confident girl, who has learned pack manners, and to trust humans.

Iris has the most spellbinding tiger-like, honey gold colored eyes. At first glance, she appears to be a beautiful German Wirehaired Pointer. We can see the wiry texture coat in her telltale whiskers and scruffy chest hair, but then, we also see the sleek build, and rich mahogany color of the Irish Setter. She is a natural athlete, and has a lean, athletic physique that flourishes with a lot of exercise.

As a double dose of hardwired hunting dog, Iris needs a job. The best way to channel her work ethic is through retrieving exercises and obedience training. She loves her training sessions and is extremely eager to please. She responds to both praise and treat motivated positive reinforcement, as well as leadership training techniques. After her mental workout, Iris loves to play ball! She wows her handler with airborne catches; Iris never misses a pitch!

Iris would be a fabulous choice for an active single or couple who enjoy outdoor activities. The more exercise she gets the better. A quiet, relaxed home would be ideal for Iris, as she can become a little anxious in the face of chaos. She may be spooked by the frantic movements of toddlers, but she would thrive in an active, but laid back family, with older kids, who have been taught to handle a dog gently.

Iris enjoys the company of other friendly dogs, and she has made fast friends with our Irish Setter, Remington. They play constantly, and manage to tire each other out. Remy has helped Iris find her inner puppy, and that process seems to have healed some old wounds. Iris could easily join a multi-dog home, with dogs who are well trained, but she may pick up bad habits from a resident wild child. She has also tested well with cats, and we would trust her in a feline home.
