My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

A bit about Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue: We tend to go for the underdog in many cases. We try to give a chance to some of those that are left behind and we truly hope that when you read these bios, you read with an open heart and an open mind to embrace what we feel is the true meaning of rescue. We hope that in the same spirit that we gave a common or non-popular or throwaway dog a chance at life that you may also consider giving a chance at a forever home. Thank you.

Percy is a handsome 1.5 year old Boxer mix who was saved from the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter (the shelter marked him Boxer/Whippet but we just think he is a Boxer mixed with some type of smaller dog). He is all brindle and weighs about 30 lbs. He is a playful dog who likes to interact with other dogs but who can also entertain himself. He enjoys tough toys that squeak and also rope toys. Percy's favorite thing is probably going for walks. He has no interest in being a running dog, but the walk is really where he bonds with his human. He also enjoys anything that involves treats - particularly training. He is low to medium energy with an occasional burst of the zoomies! He enjoys running around the yard with the other dogs (however, all adopted dogs MUST be indoor dogs to hang with the people and cannot be excluded to the outdoors.) He has recently been introduced to several of the foster kittens in the foster home and he has been curious, gentle, a teensy bit afraid of them, but generally non-reactive.

Percy was surrendered to the shelter because his people could not have dogs in their rental housing. We suspect he may have been kept in seclusion to evade the landlord. So Percy came to us a bit heartbroken from being abandoned. It took him a few days to begin to adjust to being in foster care. He has made the transition, but he may take about a week or so to acclimate to a new place. Because he was isolated, he can get surprised by things we take for granted. Luckily, Percy is inherently curious and will happily accept new experiences when they are accompanied with praise or treats. He cautiously approaches strangers, but will proceed to end up in friendly strangers' laps. Percy's ideal human will be one who he can trust to expose him to all of the things in life that he missed seeing as a puppy, and who will understand that he needs that moral support to have courage in new situations. He does not need a coddler; he needs a confident person. All in all, Percy rides well in the car and actually behaves quite well in public. Once he is comfortable with his environment and people, he is a more relaxed, happy, loving boy.

Percy is an interesting mix of dog types. He is probably several breeds mixed together but with the classic Boxer under-bite. His genetic mix produced a medium-sized dog that definitely looks Boxer, but can also look a bit like a miniature Pit Bull or Am Staff. Because of this, we will not belabor ourselves placing Percy where there are discussions of breed type or permission sought. We seek a home owner.

Percy is a master snuggler and likes to be glued to his people in a loving way. His comfort zone in his old home appears to have been the couch (he also likes to cuddle in the bed), and because he is not a shedder (he has a great, clean, sleek coat!), this seems less of a big deal to us; yet and still, we are constantly re-directing him to his favorite pet bed. We think it would be nice if Percy were placed in a home with some flexibility. Percy would love to have a leader who can help him grow rather than constantly being corrected over the “small stuff” while still benefitting from some structure and consistency of routine. Percy has a little coat that he wears on cold mornings that can go with him in the adoption.

The home we seek for Percy is a home with a yard or side patio area and with someone who understands the bond that can be created between human and dog with the walk. He walks well with his little harness which can go with him in his adoption. He has had no accidents in his foster home but will need to be shown the appropriate potty location in his new home. While it is clear that Percy has pulled some of his security in a new environment from the other dogs, Percy can still be an only dog; however, it is best if he is adopted by someone with some experience with dog ownership. His new people should be eager to do positive reinforcement training with him and to include him as part of the family. He is a very good dog who deserves lots of love!

Percy is neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed, and micro-chipped. He is crate-trained and sleeps in a wire crate at night. Though his shelter paperwork says he is age 2, it is clear to us that he is younger. If you are interested in Percy, please contact Angels Heart Dog Rescue at adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com. The phone number to the rescue is: 626-340-9316. There is no need to phone the rescue until you have first submitted an interest via e-mail. Please visit my website at: http://www.angelsheartdogrescue.com and go to the Adoption Tab to read about the adoption process and fees; thank you!
