My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Gracie comes to us from the school of hard knocks. Surrendered to a California shelter when she was just young due to apparent overcrowding at the breeder, Grace sat at the shelter for 6 months; effectively spending her puppyhood behind bars. She was rescued by someone who saw the potential and the genuine love in that big goofy face and was effectively brought up to foster care in Canada. Though the damage caused by spending formative years in a busy shelter are evident (primarily the lack of one-on-one attention during the months that manners and confidence are usually established) Grace has a genuinely loving soul. She is, like most pit bulls, very intelligent and very cuddly and very affectionate and very energetic. However, because of her lack of guidance and too many months spent in a stressful shelter environment, Gracie has adopted some protective measures that have been born out of the trauma of being transient her whole life.
• - She has a bit of a prey drive, having never been exposed to different creatures and different environments. So she can become fixated on small critters, birds, cats, and some small dogs.
• - She has a strange relationship with crates. Though she is fine in hers for a short time, long term trials are inconclusive and she can react defensively when other dogs are in or around crates.
• - She is prone to fence fighting, meaning she will react aggressively to people or dogs on other sides of fences or kennels.
• - She is extremely sensory sensitive, reacting strongly to strange, loud, or sudden noises as well as being very sensitive to body language in people.
Gracie shows promise in how she reacts immediately to correction and never seems to be oblivious to incorrect behavior. What Gracie needs is some consistency and a strong handler who not only understands her breed but can be a firm alpha while she learns the do’s and don’ts’ s of the real world. Gracie is currently receiving behavioral training and it is our hope that she can continue this after she is placed in her forever home. Gracie would do best as an only dog as her idea of pack mentality is one of defensiveness thanks to extended shelter life.
Gracie is an intelligent and loving dog. Her heart means well, she has just seen some things in her young life and she needs time in a real home to settle down, feel safe, feel confident, and get used to the idea that she no longer has to be ready at any minute for constant and jarring change. She could also benefit from some agility to help her build confidence, burn energy, and develop a fun relationship with other dogs. Her foster home has said that when the day is done, Gracie loves nothing more than to cuddle up to her human and be close and warm. She needs someone who is willing to wrap her up at night and do so for the rest of her life.
