An active, athletic, and highly-intelligent dog who is calm and well-mannered when his exercise needs are met, Hank needs regular physical activity and mental challenges to stay happy and healthy. Playful, curious, extremely sweet, and self-possessed, this noble canine lives to fulfill his role of faithful companion. As befitting both, his spitz-like and bulldog heritage, he can at times be independent and single-minded, but he is also attentive and quick to please when given direction from his handler. Although he may come off as aloof when meeting new people, this handsome boy is infectiously happy and completely silly when comfortable in his surroundings. Utterly devoted and affectionate with people he knows and trusts, it will be important to keep him well-socialized so he doesn’t become protective of family members.
A sensitive, genuinely warm and sincere dog who thrives on human companionship, Hank is looking for responsible owners willing to provide structure and confident, consistent leadership. Hank is currently working on his leash skills and receiving good manners training with Monroe SPCA. A people-pleasing canine when he knows what is expected of him, this boy has a strong work ethic and he’ll excel in obedience, as well as any other activities he participates in. He’s attentive and well-mannered on a leash; extremely attuned to his handler.
Hank is best suited as an indoor pet and companion for a home with a moderately-active lifestyle. As with all Monroe SPCA adoptable dogs, a home visit and a meet-n-greet with any housemate pets will be required prior to adoption.
Hank is the Monroe County Animal Shelter’s longest term resident; he is adoptable through Monroe SPCA. *Hank is one of six dogs at the Monroe County Animal Shelter who participated in the Dogs Gone Running program over the summer. Dogs selected for this program were partnered with the owner of Dogs Gone Running, also a long-distance runner, getting an opportunity to burn pent-up energy and stretching their legs in a vigorous, leashed run. Canine participants in this program had to be readily accepting of strangers, well-mannered on a leash, and understanding of the concept paced run going forward. The run rotation for each dog was once every other week and then twice every other week. Each dog participating in this awesome program ran approximately 1 to 1.5 mile each trek. Upon return from runs, dogs first happily greeted all with wagging tails. They then ate, then drank, and then slept, quite soundly, the remainder of the day - without exception, every dog, every time, in precisely that order.
