My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Honey and Buster!

Honey - Shiba Inu mix best guess - female/spayed - young (3 years of age) - 48 pounds - Honey-colored plush coat with black ears and mask, and white stockings and chest

Buster - young - One year of age - Shiba Inu mix best guess - male/neutered - Black and white short to medium coat - 63 pounds

We are sincerely hopeful to place these beautiful dogs as a bonded pair! While at first blush, they seem so opposite in personality - Honey is an earnest, compliant, gentle, thoughtful, self-effacing dog, and Buster - well, Buster lives up to his name; he’s impulsive, curious, a bit clumsy and an enthusiast - it is also so obvious that they are deeply bonded in a very real way.

Honey and Buster’s partnership is beautiful glimpse into the intelligence and devotion of which dogs are capable. Each dog fulfills an important need that the other has - Honey supplies for Buster the translations, and a role model for the steep learning curve he is on. Buster provides for Honey a real purpose and important job. And they both offer one another the meaningful companionship, understanding, and unconditional trust born of sharing life experiences as a bonded pair.

What Honey and Buster’s life experiences may have been we do not know - they appeared as thin, cold strays to one of our volunteers in late December. She and her husband immediately brought them in, and they, and our organization, began efforts to locate Buster and Honey’s humans. After many weeks of advertising the dogs through local animal control agencies and social media, it seemed apparent that no one was looking for Buster and Honey.

Now healthy, robust, and fully vetted, Honey and Buster are ready for adoption!

Our foster care providers and our veterinarians all believe that Buster is Honey’s son, which could definitely explain her loving tolerance as well as her great focus, and intuitive manner of helping him by example. Honey's quiet, calm and patient ways seem to guide and instruct Buster, and at this time he could not have a better model for his interactions. Honey brightens and engages when she is serving as an example for Buster, seems comforted by his presence, and joyful to have a purpose.

Buster is extremely handsome - well-proportioned and athletic. He is quite showy with his black and white coloring, and his coat is plush and soft. At 63 pounds, Buster is physically much larger than his canine mother, and in the words of his human foster mom, "much larger than he thinks he is." While we cannot ever know for certain that Honey is Buster's biological mother, she has quite obviously fulfills this role in his life, and he continues to relate to her as a puppy - watching her carefully for cues and guidance, and modeling his behaviors after hers. Having Honey as a resource has been a tremendous assistance to Buster’s foster care providers as they guide Buster through his adolescence, and support his socialization.

Both Honey and Buster are completely house trained - and both dogs absolutely love physical contact. Honey melts when she is being petted, and Buster would delight in being petted and cuddled all day long. Both dogs are extremely intelligent - quick studies in terms of learning - and food motivated, which has made teaching them a joy. At this writing they have mastered sit, stay, down, and touch. They love to go on leash walks, and they love to spend time in their fenced yard. They share a true eagerness to please - Buster in his touchingly overt manner, and Honey in her modest, cooperative, and very attentive manner.

Honey and Buster’s adopters will have a few more months of Buster’s puppyhood to navigate, and Buster will continue to need positive guidance and support during that time. But Honey will be right there, faithfully offering her wholehearted support and assistance. And both dogs will reward their adopter(s) with the same profound bond that they share with one another - along with their utter devotion, and the daily gestures of abject appreciation that dogs from their hardscrabble circumstances remember to offer throughout their lives.

Please note that we do not recommend Honey and Buster for a hone with cats or very small children. Thank you for your interest in Honey and Buster!
