Leon County Humane Society Animal rescue in Tallahassee, FL

Dedicated to the well-being of our community's companion animals.

Formed in 1960, LCHS has since been dedicated to matching families with homeless pets and educating the community about responsible pet ownership, including spaying and neutering. Each year, LCHS adopts out more than 500 pets and provides spay/neuter assistance for many more. Our dedicated Board of Directors, advisors, staff, and over 300 volunteers work tirelessly to socialize and provide companionship to all of our animals.

The Leon County Humane Society (LCHS) is a 501(c)3 non-profit, private organization, supported by individuals and businesses in our community and strong partnerships with other animal service organizations and animal welfare alliances.

We are not affiliated with or funded by any national humane groups or governmental agencies and must rely on donations to bring our services to the community.

Our Mission

-To relieve animal suffering
-To prevent animal cruelty
-To eliminate overpopulation of animals
-To promote humane education
-To enhance the human/animal bond

The Leon County Humane Society is Tallahassee's largest no kill, non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to saving Tallahassee's homeless pets by educating our community about responsible pet ownership and reducing pet overpopulation through programs like Spay/Neuter, Rescue Ride, and Friends Fur Life. Because we are a no-kill organization, we are also a “limited intake” shelter.

The Leon County Humane Society works closely with other animal welfare agencies in the community and transfers animals in from other shelters that euthanize for space, including the Tallahassee Leon Community Animal Services Center (City Shelter). We do not take animals in from the public.

Once an animal is accepted in our foster and adoption program they are not euthanized for space reasons. Unless there are medical or behavioral issues that develop, deeming an animal un-adoptable, a cat or dog will stay in our adoption program until they find their forever home.

Tallahassee is an APSCA Partnership Community, and LCHS is thrilled to be one of the organizations included in this innovative program. Over the next 3-5 years, the Partnership organizations and ASPCA will be working together to reduce the homeless pet population in Tallahassee and provide much needed resources for the pets in our area

Cat fees are $30-$150 depending on several factors. We sometimes do fee-waived promotions for cats.
Dogs are $80-$300, other animals are generally $20.

Our process:
Adopting a companion animal from LCHS involves a few simple steps...
View our adoptable animals, and select the pet(s) you are interested in adopting.
Talk to the animal(s) foster parent: Give our office a call at 224-9193 and talk with one of our adoption counselors. They will put you in touch with the animal(s)' foster parent.
OR
Some foster parents prefer to be contacted directly. If that is the case, the pet's profile will have a link to directly email their foster parent.
Fill out an adoption questionnaire.
If both you and the foster parent feel that it is a good match, make an appointment to do the adoption paperwork at our office.
Have a home visit completed by an LCHS representative.

We believe in making the best match between pet and person, so our requirements tend to be based on the needs of the animal.
